Quantification of Cell-Wall-Midpoint-Ratio Characteristics for Equal Area Discrete Global Grid System

The alignment of cell walls and their dual cell walls, quantified by the "cell wall midpoint ratio", is crucial for applications, such as tidal simulation, ocean current calculation, and atmospheric modeling on spherical grids. The OGC has highlighted that cell geometry is a primary feature of Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS). While the cell area, shape, and uniformity have been extensively discussed, the "cell wall midpoint ratio" has often been overlooked. In this study, we quantified the geometric characteristics of this index for equal-area DGGS models, based on the Snyder projection, with three different cells shapes: triangle, diamond, and hexagon. Experimental results reveal that DGGS models with the same cell shape exhibit similar geometric characteristics, which resemble the deformation patterns of the Snyder projection. Additionally, the "cell wall midpoint ratio" deviation for diamond-shaped DGGS is slightly smaller than that of triangular and hexagonal models. These geometric characteristics provide a foundation for grid selection in discrete differential computations on spherical surfaces and enhance the reliability, credibility, and practicality of DGGSs across various fields and applications.
