Abstract The South African care leaving context reflects a history of widespread youth unemployment, poverty and inequality, making transitioning from care into independent adulthood complex. Our understanding of care leaving is hampered by the absence or inaccessibility of administrative data on children in and leaving care. Although there is robust policy, legislation and practice guidelines on childcare and protection, early intervention, and prevention, there is almost no policy and legislation on preparation for leaving care and even less on aftercare services for care leavers. There is also no care leaver organizing in South Africa. Consequently, despite the significant increase in care leaving research in recent years, there remains a gap in research on aftercare services and in research on foster care. The burgeoning research on leaving care is, however, giving increasing attention to practice issues with care leavers and to understanding the resilience processes that improve care leaver outcomes. This chapter maps the strengths and limitations of policy, practice, and research related to care leaving in South Africa.
