Inflammatory Reaction post EBUS-TBNA and the role of IL-6

Aim: One of the most frequently reported side effects of EBUS-TBNA bronchoscopy by patients is fever during the first 24 hours after bronchoscopy. One of the main biomarkers of septicemia is IL-6, which has the advantage of rapidly increasing its levels within 120' of the initiation of the septicemia. The purpose of this study was to measure changes in IL-6 levels before and after bronchoscopy and their possible correlation with epidemiological, clinical, radiological & broncho-ultrasound characteristics of the lesions of the patients. IL-6 was measured in whole blood count before and 2 hours after the end of the bronchoscopy with the ELISA method. Results: IL-6 levels were measured by ELISA in 20 patients. Three samples were not included in the statistical analysis because they involved patients who underwent BAL only. The mean age was 66.76 years and 76% (13/17) were male. The mean value of IL-6 before and after bronchoscopy was 5.88 pg/ml (1.3-16.5) & 13.60 pg/ml (7.1-33.2) (p=0.001), respectively, Table 1 and Figure 1.
