A cross-sectional analysis of wearable device adoption and usage among western Europeans

Introduction: Wearable devices offer real-time health insights, but their integration into lifestyles and healthcare vary across populations. Understanding how users perceive and utilize wearable data is essential for promoting patient engagement in digital health. Methods: Employees of a global corporation participated in an e-survey on wearable device usage and behavior between July and August 2024. Descriptive statistics were used to assess device adoption, trust in data accuracy, motivations, and data-sharing behaviors among current wearable users residing in western Europe. Results: Responses from 395 respondents were assessed, with 62% (n=246) reporting current wearable device usage (mean (SD) age: 43 (9) years, 48% female). Among current users, wearables were used to track physical activity (81%), general health (60%), and sleep (43%) outcomes. Based on wearable feedback, about two-thirds of users (66%) reported changing their exercise routines, 53% set new health/fitness goals, and 29% changed their sleep habits. Most users felt confident about their data (61%), but there were some regional differences. Key wearable concerns included data accuracy (35%) and privacy and data security (33%) issues. A small percentage of current users (7%) reported sharing their data with their healthcare provider. No significant differences by gender were observed. Conclusions: Wearable usage remains popular among western Europeans. Users primarily track exercise, general health, and sleep outcomes, though concerns about accuracy and privacy persist. Despite user confidence, data sharing with healthcare providers remains low. Addressing these barriers could enhance wearables’ impact on health management.
