Prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients affected by bronchiectasis and/or NTM: a prospective study.

Bronchiectasis is a permanent dilation of bronchi. Nontuberculous mycobacteriosis (NTM) are infections substined by mycobacteria other than M. tuberculosis and M.Leprae. Both pathologies have a notable impact on quality of life of patients, so anxiety and depression are mainly described as comorbidities in non-european studies. Our aim was to define prevalence of anxiety and depression among all patients (defining the median age, sex, education, eventually previous psychological diagnosis and treatments) treated at the bronchiectasis/NTM clinic of Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia (approximately 200 patients). With more data, among future goals will be to understand if these patients have more exacerbations or more severe imaging. We asked the patients to answer questions from 4 questionnaires used to detect anxiety and depression: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). To date we collected data from 20 patients, 17 (85%) females and 3 (15%) males; the median age was 64.95 years. 11 (55%) patients completed high school and 6 (30%) obtained a degree. Five of them resulted positive at least in one questionnaire, defining a prevalence of 25% of anxiety and/or depression. Just 1 (0.2%) patient had a previous diagnosis. Anxiety and depression are underestimated comorbidities in patients with bronchiectasis/NTM. Collection of further data will be useful to quantify the impact of that pathologies and to define the need of psychological or pharmacological support, in order to improve quality of life and clinical outcome of patients.
