Gender-specific differences in lung function response after bronchoscopic thermal vapour ablation (BTVA): a retrospective analysis of the international BTVA registry

Background: Addressing gender differences in observational studies such as the BTVA registry is critical to ensure the efficacy of treatment for both sexes. Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from the international registry. Patients with at least one BTVA procedure between 03/2017 and 06/2024 and a follow-up (FU) of 6 and/or 12 months were included. Lung function response was analysed with regard to gender-specific differences. Results: 261 patients included with available FU data for 53.4% of women and 54% of men. The analysis included 75 ♀ and 86 ♂ aged 63.9±6.6 and 64.9±7.6 years, with baseline FEV1 31.8 ± 7.9 and 30.51 ±8.8 % pred., respectively. Women reported a lower number of pack-years at baseline compared to men (37.4 ± 15.5 vs. 53.1 ± 23.3). The analysis shows a significant improvement in FEV1, FVC and RV in ♀ after both 6 and 12 months. In contrast, a reduction in RV without significant improvements in FEV1 and FVC was observed in ♂. Conclusion: The analysis indicates gender-specific differences in efficacy after BTVA.
