Disease-Specific educational webinars for patients with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), a quality improvement project (QI)

Background: Patient education is an integral component of pulmonary rehabilitation programmes. Educational topics are designed to help patients understand and manage better their condition. However, ILD patients’ perception on the importance of this intervention remains unknown. We aimed via a 6-month QI programme, to investigate patients’ perception in receiving specialist educational intervention. Methods: Patients enrolled in the Greek ILD support group invited to attend disease-specific educational webinars, organised by an experienced respiratory physiotherapist and delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Post QI patients invited to provide feedback via an anonymous electronic survey. Data analysed via descriptive statics. Results: 37/100 responded to the survey; Responders: 72% patients; 22% carers. 64% IPF; 28 % CTD-ILD; 6% other type ILD; 86% first time attended an online seminar for their disease; 83% found the webinars very important for the management of their disease and 72% found the education and knowledge gained very relevant for their disease. 80% found improvement in skills to better manage their condition; 100% mentioned they would recommend the seminars to other people with similar condition. 100% suggested they would attend the seminars again if available. Conclusion: Disease specific education remains an unmet need for ILD patients in Greece. A structured educational programme to improve patients’ self management skills and knowledge for their condition is important to be embedded as part of the patients' standard care management pathway.
