Incidence of GP-attended respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and human parainfluenza virus (HPIV) amongst high-risk patients in Europe

Introduction: RSV, HMPV and HPIV respiratory tract infections (RTI) are associated with morbidity and mortality, particularly in elderly and those with risk factors. There is a paucity of data on incidences and clinical burden of these viruses in patients attending primary care with RTI, which is relevant in vaccine development. Methods: In an Ecraid Perpetual Observational Study we estimate incidences of RSV, HMPV and HPIV in older and high-risk patients attending their GP with an RTI. A recruitment schedule, informed by expected incidence patterns (Jan: 46, Jul: 22), is implemented over 12 consecutive months per country. Patients ≥60 and 50-59 eligible for influenza vaccination (targets), consulting with RTI symptoms ≤10 days are included. A nose/throat swab is taken for PCR analysis and patients are followed for 28 days (symptoms, recovery, EQ-5D, re-consultations, complications).
