Immediate Autonomic Response to High-Intensity Interval Exercise in Asthmatic Children

Background: Increased sympathetic activity during or after exercise is a concern in asthmatic children. Limited evidence exists about the autonomic response to different exercise modalities. Aim: To investigate the immediate autonomic response to high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) in asthmatic children. Methods: Nineteen asthmatic children (mean age=10.1±2.3 years, BMI=19.3±4.3 kg/m2) who have not exercise-induced asthma, were included in our study. The participants underwent a symptom limited cardiopulmonary exercise test and recorded their maximum heart rate (HRmax) and speed values. After a one-hour resting period, the participants performed an HIIE session (85% of HRmax loading and 55% of HRmax resting) at a personalized speed. Heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) using a Polar device and thermal responses by a FLIR thermal camera were recorded before, after, and at the 5-min mark of the recovery. Repeated measures ANOVA was used for statistical analysis of differences between before-after-recovery values. Results: There was a significant differences between before-after-recovery HR and before-after HRV values and this differences originated from before-after HRV, and before-recovery HR values (p<0.001). Changes in thermal values were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to our results, before-after HRV and HR values were different in asthmatic patients who performed HIIE. While HRV reaches normal values, HR remains higher than before HIIE in the recovery period. These results may indicate a prolonged response to HIIE via the sympathetic system in asthmatic children. In future studies, these responses may be compared with those of healthy peers.
