Concomitant SABA prescription on top of ICS/LABA in the NEWTON study

OBJECTIVES: Analyze the concomitant medications among the NEWTON population (not adequately controlled European patients starting a treatment with beclomethasone dipropionate/formoterol fumarate [BDP/FF] 100/6 µg dry powder inhaler (DPI) via NEXThaler®), with a focus on the concomitant usage of short-acting bronchodilators (SABA) verifying the alignment with GINA recommendations. Methods: A post-hoc analysis was conducted on 423 evaluable patients of the NEWTON study. Of these, 293 (69.3%) received a prescription of extrafine BDP/FF as maintenance and reliever therapy (MART), 30.7% of patients a maintenance only approach. 170 patients assumed at least one concomitant medication on top of BDP/FF 100/6 NEXThaler. Results: Among the MART group, only 4.1% used a SABA concurrently with MART. The percentage was markedly higher (50%) in the Maintenance group with a statistically significant difference (Fisher exact test p<0.0001) between groups. erj;66/suppl_69/PA1429/F1 F1 F1 Conclusions: The findings suggest that the MART approach is being frequently used in patients treated with BDP/FF and in the present study and correctly adopted by the physicians in Europe. The high adherence to MART contributes to its effectiveness in managing asthma and reducing the need for additional rescue medication.
