Survey evaluating CompEx Asthma components, and current and future digital enablers

Introduction: CompEx Asthma is a composite endpoint comprising existing outcomes (termed ‘components’) used in clinical trials assessing exacerbation risk reduction by asthma therapies. Created by academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies, the value of its components for assessing asthma control requires broader validation. Methods: An online survey including global healthcare professionals (eg specialists and primary care professionals [PCPs]), researchers and patient advocacy group members was conducted to inform CompEx Asthma iterations. They evaluated respiratory outcome measures, including CompEx Asthma components, and current and future digital technologies. Results: Most of the 76 respondents agreed that CompEx Asthma’s components reflect asthma control: measures of exacerbations (96%), reliever inhaler use (93.5%), patients’ self-reported symptoms (76.3%), and lung function (peak expiratory flow; 63.1%). Other measures not included in CompEx Asthma were also assessed (eg daily activity limitation; 86.8% agreement to reflect asthma control). Specialists and PCPs were broadly aligned in their responses on all measures. Digital monitoring devices were used by 33% of respondents; lack of availability was the primary barrier to use (43.4%). Of the CompEx Asthma components, monitoring reliever inhaler use was proposed to be most improved by digital devices. Conclusion: CompEx Asthma’s components are perceived to be reflective measures of asthma control. While digital monitoring devices are not widely used, it is hoped remote disease monitoring will improve with their implementation; ongoing advances may alleviate current limitations or barriers (Dunn et al.
