Background: Severe asthma (SA) and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) are chronic airway inflammatory conditions that coexist in 40-65% of patients. Aims: To assess the baseline features of patients with SA and comorbid NP or severe CRSwNP with comorbid asthma, in an interim analysis of the RESPONSE study. Methods: RESPONSE is the first European prospective real-world study evaluating mepolizumab in adult patients with coexisting asthma and CRSwNP. Patients were recruited following a prescription decision for mepolizumab, based on a primary diagnosis (PD) of either SA or CRSwNP, accompanied by comorbid NP or asthma of any severity. Patients were monitored for 12 months as per clinical practice. Results: 91 patients were included in the analysis, 59 of which had CRSwNP as PD. Patients with CRSwNP as PD were 67.8% women, 51.3 years old and had a BMI of 26.8, compared with 50.0% women, and mean age and BMI of 53.8 years and 27.9, respectively, in patients with SA as PD. 3.3% of patients had comorbid COPD, 12.1% reported depression and 12.1% anxiety. FEV1 was 74.1% in the group with SA as PD vs 81.0% in the group with CRSwNP. Blood eosinophil counts were comparable (Table). Conclusions: Although the severities of their respective comorbidities vary, interestingly, the two groups exhibit similar clinical features except for lung function, which favors CRSwNP patients.
