Perceived Effects of Family Planning on Human Population Control, Health and Agricultural Production among Semi-Urban Women Farmers in Imo State, Nigeria

This study investigates the perceived effects of family planning on health and agricultural production among semi-urban women farmers in Imo State, Nigeria using structured questionnaire to gather information from 150 Reproductive Women Farmers. The results of the findings revealed that 44.6% of the respondents are between 20 to 30 years (prime years), with a mean age of 35 years, while the mean household size was 7 members. The mean farm size is 1.5. They are fully aware of family planning (96.6%). They became aware through several means, such as health centres (96.7%), August meetings (84%), and radio (81.3%). The major methods of family planning used by the respondents were the injectable (95.3%), condom (78.6%), oral pills (69.3%), among other means. The major constraints to the use of family planning by the respondents are husband's Objection (98%), desire for more children (96.6%), cost of device (94%), among others. The major effects of the use of family planning by the respondents on health and agricultural production include reduced incidence of child/maternal mortality(M=3.31), good health for increase production (M=3.52), increase participation of women in production (M=3.50), increased food supply for the family (M=3.02), improve birth spacing (M=2.54), better nutrition for all members (M=3.05), prevent unwanted pregnancy (M=2.91) among other benefits It is, therefore, recommended that an adequate health and education programme on family planning be planned, to inform both the husbands and the wives on the benefits of family planning and birth control methods and the Male population should be fully integrated in the family planning programmes.
