Background: Medical education research supports the development and training of future health professionals. While innovative curricula are increasingly implemented in undergraduate medical education and evaluations and student outcomes are tracked, there is often a lack of research infrastructure dedicated to identifying the most effective educational approaches. In this paper we sought to identify current departmental strengths and gaps, as well as insights gathered from external institutions to develop a unified framework for building a Center for Innovation, Scholarship and Research (CISR). Methods: This study was conducted at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. A faculty needs assessment, departmental interviews (n=14), and interviews with external institutions (n=7) were conducted. We analyzed these qualitative data thematically following a systemic three level needs assessment. Results: We identified four critical areas for the development of CISR: 1) expert guidance and consultation; 2) research support and services; 3) partnerships with external resources; and 4) community of practice. Conclusion: The findings of this study reveal areas of focus for improving and advancing undergraduate medical education research, offering an opportunity for other institutions and centers to inform and utilize for the development of sustainable research infrastructure.
