Carica papaya L. (papaya) is a fruit-bearing tropical plant belonging to the Caricaceae family. The papaya fruit is mainly composed of 80-90% water, 8-12% carbohydrates, and a very small amount of fat and proteins. This plant is grown throughout the world for its high nutraceutical properties and for the industrial preparation and extraction of the enzyme papain, which has various health benefits. During industrial processing of papaya fruit, the seeds and peels that form approximately 20-30% of total fruit weight remain unutilized and discarded. This biowaste can be utilized to produce value-added products. Papaya seeds are a good source of dietary fibers, proteins, lipids, and glucosinolates. The papaya peels too are rich in carotenoids, vitamins A and C, and the enzyme papain. Recent worldwide interest in the recovery of pharmaceutically important bioactives and renewable sources of energy has shifted the focus of investigation on the valorization of papaya biowaste. The agro-industrial biowaste of papaya has various applications in biofuels and paper pulp industries and also in the production of bioactive components that are cardioprotective, antiviral, and antibacterial in nature. For maximum utilization of the nonedible parts of the papaya plant, downstream processing requires various optimization techniques. This chapter focuses on the pharmacological and nutraceutical properties of the papaya peel, seed, leaves, and fruit. This includes the advanced valorization practices of C. papaya L. biowaste and highlights its potential role in naturopathic medicine and the biofuel industry.
