Objectives: This study investigated the effects of Banchong-san, a traditional Korean herbal formula, and low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) on renal function and body composition in patients with obesity.Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted for six patients who received Banchong-san and LCD for weight management. Patients limited carbohydrate intake to 50-60 g per day. Body composition parameters, including weight, body fat mass, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), were evaluated at baseline and post-treatment. Adverse events were monitored.Results: All six patients showed increased eGFR exceeding Minimal Clinically Important Difference. Five patients exhibited significant reductions in body weight and fat mass, suggesting a possible association between weight loss and improved renal function. Minor constipation was reported in some patients.Conclusion: This retrospective case series suggests Banchong-san and LCD may improve renal function and body composition in individuals with obesity. This study highlights the potential of this integrative approach for managing obesity and metabolic diseases. Further large-scale controlled studies are required to confirm these observations.
