Exploring XR Applications in Healthcare and Well-being: A Systematic Review of IEEE VR and ISMAR (2020–2025)

The recent era has observed a significant amount of research activities in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) in several fields, including healthcare and well-being. Those works are getting published in renowned journals and conference proceedings. In this review paper, we have worked on the publications in IEEE VR and ISMAR since the year 2020, two premier venues for researchers in the AR/VR/MR field. We performed several stages of filtering through the proceedings of these conferences, and shortlisted 61 papers (30 from IEEE VR and 31 from ISMAR) for our work. According to the research scope, tool, application, and contribution, we have categorized the selected papers into several categories: surgical guidance, imaging, physical and mental rehabilitation, emotional improvement, etc. We have analyzed those papers categorically, explored the general trend, research gaps, limitations, future scope, overall contribution, citation count, country of origin, etc. This review paper will help researchers, academicians, healthcare professionals, practitioners, etc., to have better insight into present-day healthcare tools and applications, research trends, and future directions.
