Surface electromyography (EMG) is widely used in clinical diagnoses, exercise science, and biomechanical applications. Because of its diverse applications, it is essential to understand the processing of EMG signals for specific tasks. This paper discusses the effects of filters on the amplitude and timing of EMG signals and provides supporting experimental data to quantify those effects. Multiple commonly used filters were applied to EMG signals collected during isometric contractions to quantify the changes to onset and amplitude. Significant time shifts based on the filter type for EMG onset (p < .001) and amplitude across filters (p = .001) were observed using one-way repeated-measures ANOVAs. Most filter types demonstrated excellent reliability (ICCs: 0.79–1.00) for EMG onset, with the zero-shift low-pass filter underperforming relative to the others. Overall, filter choice significantly impacts the onset and cancelation of amplitude. Non-research and/or novice users should carefully select the appropriate filter type based on the given task and desired outcome.
