Abstract Wind energy is a vital component of the global transition to renewable energy, yet its rapid expansion presents a significant challenge: mitigating the impact of wind turbines on bat (and bird) populations. Collisions with turbine blades threaten biodiversity and raise concerns about the ecological sustainability of wind farms. However, despite the severity of the issue, existing deterrent systems are often ineffective as they rely on passive or constant signals, which cannot always generate enough impact for deterrence. To address this challenge, an adaptive, blade-mounted, high-frequency acoustic deterrence system utilizing piezo-composite materials to generate directional deterrent signals has been proposed. The project directly integrates high-frequency, directional acoustic emissions onto the turbine blades, providing an active and localized deterrent at the critical impact zone. Piezoelectric composite actuators embedded within the turbine blades enable real-time, high-bandwidth acoustic emission, producing dynamic deterrent signals that can be modulated in frequency and intensity based on the proximity and behavior of bats. Conceptual design and preliminary analysis of the proposed acoustic deterrence system are presented here, with the detailed experimental validation and in-field testing being reserved for future work. This project investigates the integration of smart materials with adaptive control to develop multifunctional structures, contributing to the research in intelligent systems. Through computational modeling, laboratory experiments, and field validation, future efforts will assess the system’s real-world performance. This study, thus, aims to create a scalable and efficient solution that minimizes bat (and bird) mortality around wind turbines without compromising the turbine’s performance.
