Photography: a Communication Tool for Deconstructing Disability and Its Impact on the Self-Esteem of People with Scoliosis

Objective: To determine whether portrait photography can be a tool to raise awareness in society about the inclusion and normalization of people with physical disabilities, specifically scoliosis. Theoretical Framework: Portrait photography was approached as a communication tool and to make people with disabilities visible. They have maintained a constant struggle to be integrated and included in all roles of society and have gradually been occupying spaces. As Valencia (2014) and Velarde (2012) reflect, the limitations are in society itself and not in the person, that is, if society were prepared for us, disability would disappear. Method: The study was approached from a qualitative perspective, using a survey as a research technique applied to a sample of 254 people diagnosed with various types of scoliosis who were contacted through online groups and communities. According to Hansen (2002), a survey is considered qualitative when it does not take into account the frequency of categories (or values), but rather seeks the empirical diversity of the members' properties, even if these properties are expressed in numbers. Results and Discussion: Results such as the fact that the majority of respondents described feeling sad, invisible, excluded, discriminated against, for not seeing themselves reflected in the visual media stand out. Research Implications: This research has a social implication by allowing this group of vulnerable people to be photographed like anyone else, and by allowing society to identify and include them, and normalize their presence. Originality/Value: This study contributes to raising awareness in society; it is original and provides social value, highlighting the importance of photography in making people with multiple scoliosis visible.
