The focus of this book is relatively narrow. As was set out in the prologue, our goal was to produce a sociological analysis of Bigfooting as a knowledge-making community, drawing on concepts from, and contributing to, Science and Technology Studies (STS), cultural sociology, and the nascent field of the sociology of mystery. We have been open that we were drawn to the subject after watching some of the popular Bigfoot ‘reality’ television shows aired on cable television. Among others, Diana Pasulka (2016 ; 2019 ) has noted the impact that television has had on our belief systems. Using the example of UFOs or UAPs, she argues that the ‘realist montage’ has led to a confusing picture, with audiences less able to separate fact from fiction. As she maintains, “the movie image [has] trumped the historical record” ( 2019 : 121).
