Introduction
Le résumé fourni par la source
The ‘Minnesota Iceman’ made headlines when a body encased in ice was exhibited at local carnivals and fairs. Could this be the body of a Bigfoot? The display drew interest not only from the public but also from cryptozoologists (and the FBI). While cryptozoologists attempted to describe the specimen in scientific terms, the Iceman was finally revealed as a hoax. The impact of the incident was to widen the divide between cryptozoology and mainstream science and bolster the view that Bigfoot is nothing but a series of hoaxes. Nonetheless, belief in Bigfoot remains strong across North America. The Introduction explores the milieu from which emerges the activity of Bigfooting; expeditions into the forests to capture proof of the elusive creature. The chapter establishes the basis upon which we argue that a sociological study of Bigfooting allows us to explore the way in which communities outside the boundaries of institutional science make knowledge.
