Bigfoot may be elusive, but it is not silent. Television programmes about Bigfooting regularly feature scenes of Bigfooters calling out into the night, hoping for a howl or whistle in response. Bigfooting has developed discrete fields of expertise, with some establishing themselves as dedicated audio experts. These Bigfooters collect, analyse, and image mysterious sounds recorded in the field. Using resources such as the Macaulay Library at Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology, they eliminate the known in order to assess whether a sound might plausibly be that of a Bigfoot. Yet they must face the ‘Bigfooter’s regress’; without an accepted reference recording of a Bigfoot call, there is no way to convince sceptics solely on the basis of audio evidence. Accordingly, Bigfooters rely on two widely accepted audio references: the ‘Ohio Howl’ and the ‘Sierra Sounds’ as their referents. This chapter explores the way in which the Bigfooting community collects and assesses audio evidence.
