Abstract: Against a backdrop of urbanization and demographic growth, the Mbao classified forest is undergoing significant anthropization. This phenomenon has accentuated the expansion of agricultural areas and the exploitation of forest resources. It is linked to the modification of surfaces, which are undergoing a dynamic favoured by climate change and anthropic pressure. These changes have direct implications for the availability of natural resources. A better understanding of land use patterns and vegetation cover is a major concern for this area, which is undergoing severe degradation. This approach forms part of the conservation and management framework for protected areas. To study land use, a diachronic study using images was carried out. The aim of this study is to map the different landscape units of the Mbao classified forest and to understand the dynamics of land use in order to detect any changes that have occurred. To carry out this study, a research methodology was adopted ranging from mapping, change detection and analysis of the evolution of land cover classes. The results show that anthropogenic classes dominate natural classes in the landscape. This indicates that forest areas have considerably regressed, due to a strong human hold on the forest. The changes observed are the result of over-exploitation of forest resources and uncontrolled agriculture, and show that environmental degradation has remained intense over this period.
