have also increased the incidence of tooth erosion, particularly among children and teenagers, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue.2 Research has raised concerns about the potential cariogenic and erosive effects of commonly used pediatric oral medications.However, there is limited information available on the erosive and cariogenic potential of over-the-counter pediatric medications.3 In conclusion, while PLMs offer convenience and palatability, they also pose risks to dental health due to their sugar content and acidity.Addressing these concerns requires a better understanding of the impact of these medications on dental health and the development of strategies to minimize their adverse effects on tooth enamel.4 IntroductIonThe most prevalent and infectious condition affecting the oral cavity is tooth decay, primarily caused by the fermentation of dietary carbohydrates by bacteria, resulting in the generation of acids.However, certain chronic illnesses such as asthma and epilepsy, along with the medications used to manage them, may exacerbate the risk or severity of tooth decay. 1 Asthma, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 300 million individuals worldwide, results in excessive mucus production in the bronchi, leading to breathing difficulties and airflow obstruction.Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of asthma.Similarly, epilepsy, a common neurological disorder affecting 1-3% of the population, is characterized by seizures and can lead to mental and physical abnormalities, particularly in children under the age of 15. 2 Children with chronic conditions like asthma and epilepsy often receive aqueous medications due to their ease of administration and tolerability.However, these medications, with their low pH, high sugar content, and viscosity, pose a risk for dental decay.Sweeteners like sucrose, commonly added to improve taste, can contribute to dental complications by promoting acid production when metabolized by oral bacteria.3 The frequent consumption of sugary medications can lead to acid production by oral bacteria, resulting in enamel disintegration and tooth decay.Moreover, acids used as additives in pediatric liquid medications (PLMs) can further contribute to tooth erosion when the pH drops below 5.5.Lifestyle changes
