Anemia as a general medical challenge: literature review, data from own studies and rationale for a new classification

This article addresses key aspects of the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of anemic syndrome. The diagnostic criteria for "anemia" have been refined. The entire spectrum of anemias is analyzed in detail: "deficiency anemias" (associated with insufficiency of iron and vitamins), anemia of chronic disease (ACD) (accompanying long-term oncological, autoimmune, and infectious-inflammatory disorders), and "hematological anemias" (anemias in diseases of the blood system). Original data are presented characterizing previously unknown features of the pathogenesis of anemia of chronic disease, and a novel classification for this type of anemia is proposed. Current methods for treating anemic syndrome are characterized. Based on available and newly obtained data, a fundamentally new general classification of anemias has been formulated and presented.
