Temporal bone cholesteatoma is an aggressive lesion of the temporal bone that frequently involves the middle ear, facial nerve, and inner ear, and may even lead to severe complications such as facial paralysis and hearing loss. This consensus, jointly developed by the Ear Surgery Group of the Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and a multidisciplinary panel of experts, systematically outlines the diagnostic criteria for temporal bone cholesteatoma, the mechanisms underlying facial nerve and hearing impairment, and the surgical approaches for different types of the disease. It aims to standardize intraoperative strategies for the protection and functional reconstruction of the facial nerve and hearing, with the ultimate goal of improving surgical outcomes.
