Retraction Notices from NIH Funded Studies: Insights and Lessons
Résumé fourni par la source
Medical articles are periodically retracted by authors or journals for various reasons, ranging from duplicate publication, which does not affect the quality of the information in the article, to serious misconduct such as scientific fraud. Analysis of these retractions can help readers and journals understand critical responsibilities involved in project development and publication. Because studies funded by the National Institutes of Health are presumed to be of high quality, and because NIH grant funding is highly competitive, this study examined rates of, and reasons for, retractions in published studies supported by NIH funding. The PubMed database was searched with “NIH” listed in the grants and funding fields between 2019 and 2023.This search returned 607,561 results; 137 of these articles were retracted. The most frequent explanation for retraction was data integrity and image/figure discrepancy. The authors of the articles identified most of the errors. Articles published by individuals with presumably strong research credentials are retracted periodically. This situation indicates that authors, journals, reviewers, and readers need to evaluate published material carefully and critically.
