Living Independently and Institutions

This chapter analyzes deinstitutionalization as a movement that involves rethinking Living Independently in institutions and reimagining it as part of a dynamic movement. Having presented the Capdroits initiative and methodology, it discusses three key ideas: experiences of institutionalization as a loss of autonomy; not giving up on autonomy; and imagining emancipatory relations with institutions. The research output of Capdroits demonstrates that care institutions can be experienced as places of constraints, imposing norms and practices that prevent persons from making choices independently. In institutions, individuals may experience a loss of autonomy, being subject to rules, decisions and other forms of restriction in their daily lives. Promoting Living Independently in support services requires institutional measures that allow people to make decisions. The imaginary of Living Independently feeds the instituting process and thus contributes to deinstitutionalization, understood as a transformation of the habits and norms of collective life.
