Abstract Screening for disease is a key strategy of preventive medicine and there are numerous examples of population‐based screening programs internationally. Screening involves the purposeful application of tests to an asymptomatic population in order to classify people into those who are likely to have or develop a disease and those who are not. Screening is a social intervention as well as a medical one, and this entry outlines key issues in this area, including the following: how decisions to offer screening are made; the potential for both benefits and harms from screening; and the social and ethical implications of novel screening interventions.
