Children'S and Adolescents' Health in the United States

Abstract Factors impacting children's and adolescents' health are largely due to structural factors such as parents or caregivers, schools, and daycare. Child health is an important marker of health on it is own and it is cumulative and informs future health. Infant health and even prenatal health have direct and indirect associations with adult health and general well‐being. For example, those who are born normal birth weight are more likely to have a healthy weight status in childhood and adolescences. Disparities in youth health reflect disparities in health found among adults, where marginalized individuals such as Black Americans or those who are low income experience the worst health. These disparities were highlighted during the COVID‐19 epidemic and subsequent vaccination roll out highlighted these disparities. Marginalized groups were the most likely to be impacted by the epidemic and least likely to be vaccinated. Recently screen use, especially social media and how it relates to mental health among youth, has been questioned. Research finds that any screen time negatively impacts physical health and screen use, especially social media use has been found to negatively impact mental health.
