Beauty Products and Health

Abstract Researchers suggest that beauty and health are interrelated and that beauty products can both benefit (i.e., cosmaceuticals) and harm (i.e., toxicants) one's health. In addition to the impacts on physical health, cultural values attached to certain notions of beauty can also impact women's mental and psychological health. The study of beauty products and health focuses on gender, medicine, and their relationships to culture, class, and consumer capitalism. Such studies are often based on a binary of seeing certain products as being harmful or beneficial. Researchers have recently moved beyond this divisive approach by demonstrating the complicated history of the beauty industry and its corollary cultural, economic, and sociopolitical effects. Besides gendered exploitation (i.e., low wages) in such a doubly gendered beauty industry, scholars have examined the potential health risks of long‐term exposure to toxic beauty products faced by women who produce beauty products or offer beauty services.
