In recent years, their convergence with traditional East Asian medicine, particularly acupuncture, and electroceuticals has given rise to the emerging concept of “acupuncture electroceuticals.” These devices integrate classical acupoint theory with modern bioelectronic medicine, offering a dual perspective that is increasingly reflected in academic and clinical discourse. The term 'Acupuncture electroceuticals' was first introduced by the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine in 2022 to distinguish acupoint based electroceuticals from conventional neuromodulation devices. A notable milestone in this trajectory includes the 2005 U.S. FDA approval of electro acupuncture derived devices for overactive bladder, which later evolved into implantable tibial nerve stimulators. Current modalities span fixed, portable, wearable, and implantable systems, each with distinct therapeutic potentials and safety considerations. While short-term electroacupuncture under professional supervision remains relatively safe, long-term use of implantable and wearable devices necessitates careful risk management. Importantly, international initiatives such as the NIH TARA project underscore the growing recognition of acupoint research within the broader bioelectronic medicine community. The development of acupuncture electroceuticals not only broadens the clinical reach of acupuncture from hospitals to homes but also represents a critical intersection of acupuncture stimulation and neuromodulation theory. Establishing standardized technical and regulatory frameworks will be essential to ensure safety, efficacy, and global adoption. As such, acupuncture electroceuticals are poised to become a promising contributor to precision medicine, bridging traditional therapeutic wisdom with cutting-edge bioelectronic innovation.
