The multifaceted value of bamboo: Pharmacological properties and ecological benefits

Abstract Bamboo is a highly versatile and valuable plant that has played substantial role in many cultures and economies worldwide. It demands minimal pesticides and water, which makes it an eco-friendly crop. Bamboo absorbs higher levels of carbon dioxide than many other plant species and produces 35% more oxygen than a comparable size of trees from any other plant species, thereby making it an important plant in the battle against global warming. Furthermore, bamboo is regarded as a sustainable energy source that is capable of substituting fossil fuels and wood. The plant contains silica, arginine, choline, albuminoids, waxes, oxalic acid, reducing sugars, resins, thiamine, cyanogenetic glycosides, histidine, betaine, riboflavin, cysteine, protein, glutelin, lysine, niacin, proteolytic enzymes, nucleases and urease that contribute to its medicinal properties, including antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Bamboo has been traditionally used to treat detoxification, fever, edema, respiratory disorders, hypertension, chest inflammation, vomiting, excessive thirst, diarrhea and arteriosclerosis. This review aims to explore the distinct pharmacological and physicochemical properties of bamboo species. Although bamboo has been utilized as medicine and food by different civilizations since antiquity, limited research has been conducted on its bioactive components and potential applications. Consequently, further research is a prerequisite to better comprehend the biological activities of the bamboo’s constituents.
