Rural road infrastructure lags behind the growing demand for travel as the fatality rate is higher than other types of injuries on rural roads. Random parameters logit models are built to explore the crash severity factor and temporal instability at rural road intersections, utilizing crash data from 2020 to 2022 in China, Shandong Province. The temporal stability of the model parameters is assessed for different years using a series of likelihood ratio tests. Results show that sideswipe crashes at afternoon peak times or driving with passengers are more likely to result in injuries. Female driver indicators effected an increase in both minor and severe injuries, while the older-than-50-years driver indicator had the opposite phenomenon. Heavy vehicle and weekend indicators show a consistently higher probability of fatal injury. The determinants of crash injury severities change over time and show a clear temporal instability in rural road intersection crashes.
