The tumour microenvironment (TME) is a diverse, dynamic, and complex signalling network comprising an ecosystem of cancer stemness, cancer cells, vascularisation, molecules, immune cells, extracellular matrix, cancer-associated fibroblasts, stromal tissues, endothelial cells, tissue-resident cell types and cytokines that surround, nourish and spread a tumour cell [ 1 ]. In 1889, TME concept was credited to an English surgeon, Stephen Paget, as the first to propose the theory of “seed (cancer cells) and soil (growth-promoting microenvironment)” to explain the significant role played by the microenvironment in cancer development and metastasis. Based on different cancers arising from various locations, tissues, or organs, the contents of the TME may reflect of the intriguing nature of the cancer cells, patient characteristics, tumour stage, cellular and acellular components, and signalling pathways, as well as the corresponding mechanisms.
