This chapter problematises the complex interplay between AI, interculturality and ideology for Intercultural Communication Education and Research (ICER). The authors examine how artificial intelligence (AI) applications conceptualise interculturality ‘scientifically’, using the concept of ideology as an analytical basis. Without any surprise, in the first analytical section, the authors show that the AI systems under review can both perpetuate and challenge existing ideological biases about interculturality as a scientific and educational notion. Through a further dialogue with one of the applications, they highlight AI&s;s potential to reflect and renegotiate ideological positions, suggesting that ‘users’ play a crucial role in shaping AI&s;s outputs. The chapter thus emphasises the need for in-depth critical and reflexive engagement with AI to avoid reinforcing dominant ideologies, promoting a more refined understanding of interculturality while refraining from accusing AI of epistemic and ethical wrong-doings from which humans cannot escape themselves. Lastly, the authors question whether AI is an ‘evil ideologue’ or merely a tool that mirrors human ideological complexities – humans who might also themselves turn out to be ‘evil ideologues’ as far as interculturality is concerned.
