Delivering an online multi-component non-pharmacological intervention approach for family caregivers of dementia Patients: a pilot service-Learning program

As the number of dementia patients increasing, more and more family caregivers are getting involved, requiring social work professionals providing appropriate support. This pilot study evaluated an online Multicomponent Non-pharmacological Intervention Approach (MCNIA) for 36 family caregivers of dementia patients provided by 40 social work students in a Service-Learning Program (SLP) in China. A mixed-method evaluation was conducted using a pre-post-test design to explore the outcomes of students and family caregivers. Result illustrated that the SLP has a positive impact on social work student’s self-efficacy (t = 2.451, p < 0.05, d = 0.39), communication competence (t = 2.593, p < 0.05, d = 0.41), and social responsibility (t = 1.778, p = 0.083, d = 0.28). The online MCNIA promotes family caregivers’ competence and mastery as well as patients’ wellbeing by inputting beneficial elements of disease knowledge, caregiver role clarification, social network management, and group involvement that accelerate expectation changes and behaviours.
