#104 Online patient education improves understanding of IgAN

Abstract Background and Aims This study assessed the impact of online patient education on knowledge, confidence and intent to act regarding IgAN. Method The educational intervention consisted of 2 activities comprised of text, integrated visuals, and video commentary published on WebMD Education in July and August 2024. Demographic questions were asked prior to each activity. Knowledge questions were asked both before and after to assess learning gains. Intent to change and confidence questions were asked at the end of each activity. Absolute improvements were calculated for pre/post questions. Results Activity 1: What is Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy? 11,243 learners; 1,570 completers of all questions Age: 53% >60 years old, 32% 46–59 years old Geographic Location: 30% Midwest, 28% Southeast, 24% Northeast, 9% Southwest, 8% West Highest Grade Level Completed: 24% some college but no degree; 22% high school/GED; 20% 2-year degree; 18% 4-year degree; 15% more than 4-year degree; 1% some high school On post-test, 75% understood how kidney failure can happen when your kidneys don't filter blood well enough. Additionally, 40% are confident talking to healthcare team about risk for IgAN and 38% will work with healthcare team about IgAN. Activity 2: Things to Know About Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy 12,041 learners; 1.662 completers of all questions Age: 48% >60 years old, 35% 46–59 years old Race/Ethnicity: 77% White or Caucasian/non-Hispanic, 2% Black or African-American, 4% Hispanic or Latino Gender: 74% female, 16% male, 10% prefer not to answer, <1% non-binary After the education, 13% increase in knowledge regarding the impact of IgAN on your kidney health (45% pre to 58% post). Additionally, 59% are confident talking to healthcare team about risk for IgAN and 50% will work with healthcare team about IgAN. Conclusion The metrics and outcomes gathered in this assessment are a strong indicator that online patient activities on WebMD Education improved knowledge and confidence and prompted intent to act related to IgAN.
