The proliferation of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LEV) in aquatic ecosystems poses serious ecological and health risks. Therefore, developing sustainable and low-cost adsorbents for their removal is of great environmental importance. This study presents a novel Ni‒Fe layered double hydroxide/date seed nanocomposite (Ni‒Fe LDH/DS) synthesized by combining date seed waste with Ni‒Fe LDH to improve the adsorption capacity and achieve desalination. A novel green synthesis route was developed to prepare a Ni–Fe LDH/date seed nanocomposite capable of simultaneously removing CIP and LEV. Characterization via XRD, FTIR, and FESEM/EDS confirmed their layered structure, functional groups (-OH, -COO⁻), and homogeneous surface morphology. Batch experiments revealed optimal CIP and LEV removal at pH 7, with efficiencies of 99.98% and 96.23%, respectively. The process adhered to the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order kinetics, with maximum capacities of 601.20 mg/g and 506.40 mg/g for CIP and LEV, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed exothermic, spontaneous adsorption. The nanocomposite demonstrated exceptional desalination performance, removing up to 99.8% of the ions, and maintained over 80% efficiency after five regeneration cycles. The estimated cost of the nanocomposite was approximately $3.31 per gram. Cytotoxicity tests revealed that the nanocomposite (CC50 = 427.56±10.42 µg/ml) had better biocompatibility than did pristine Ni-Fe LDH (CC50 = 377.44 µg/ml), confirming its safety for environmental applications. Greenness and whiteness assessments via the MoGAPI and RGB12 strategies highlighted the method’s sustainability. This work highlights an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution for removing antibiotics from wastewater.
