Application of MICP and EICP in Cultural Heritage Restoration and Protection: A Review
Résumé fourni par la source
Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) and enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) are promising technologies that have demonstrated unique advantages in the restoration and protection of cultural heritage. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of both MICP and EICP, and discusses their applications in cultural heritage restoration, including the types of heritage objects that can be treated using these techniques. Key research findings and practical applications of MICP and EICP in the consolidation and protective coating of various cultural heritage materials are reviewed. Despite the remarkable progress achieved in improving the preservation state and durability of heritage artifacts, several limitations remain. These include ammonia emissions, insufficient curing strength, long repair durations, color mismatch, and challenges in restoring severely damaged or missing parts of heritage objects. Overall, this review enhances the current understanding of the potential applications of MICP and EICP technologies in cultural heritage restoration and conservation. It provides valuable reference material for future research in the field and contributes to the long-term preservation of historically significant artifacts.
