As wind turbines are scaled up in size, the standards for their development and tests have been continuously enhanced. A wind turbine test bench is designed to simulate the operation conditions of the drive-train and nacelle in order to reduce the costs and time of developing WTs. In this paper, an active disturbance rejection control-based rotational speed controller is proposed for the wind turbine test bench. First, a simplified model of the wind turbine test bench is constructed. The controller is then designed to regulate the rotational speed by estimating and compensating for the effects of total disturbances. Finally, an advanced optimization algorithm, called NHWOA, is applied to tune the bandwidth of the ADRC. The results demonstrate that the ADRC-based strategy performs better than the PI-based rotational speed control strategy in terms of both rapidity and stability.
