How can something ‘feel&s; like a story? In this chapter I explore an embodied reading of ‘Hansel and Gretel&s; in the book The Singing Bones (2016). In The Singing Bones , Shaun Tan realises each of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales as a photographed sculpture, capturing the story of ‘Hansel and Gretel&s; in one image. I use new materialism as a means of exploring an embodied way of reading and haptic visuality. The book is considered as ‘vibrant matter&s; and examined through the intra-actions that take place at the boundaries between ‘things&s;. I consider the concept of the abject, and how through both horror and curiosity, I am both drawn to and recoil from Tan&s;s sculptures. Finally, I argue that new materialism calls for new ways of presenting academic thought and calls for the new forms of representation, knowing and becoming.
