Characterizing prior research experience of applicants to the FMD RapSDI program: first six cycles

Context The Family Medicine Discovers Rapid Cycle Scientific Discovery and Innovation program (FMD RapSDI), a collaboration of DARTNet Institute and American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFPF), is designed to build capacity for family medicine innovation by funding short-term, high-impact research grants to family physicians. Research projects include topics that are relevant to family medicine, innovative, feasible to accomplish within one year, and have strong potential for future generalizability. Eligible applicants are family physicians who are AAFP members. Applicants with little to no previous research experience are especially encouraged; DARTNet Institute administers the program and provides scholars with technical and research support to carry out their projects. Objective To characterize evidence of prior research experience of FMD RapSDI applicants from the first six cycles of the program (2019-2025). Study Design and Analysis Mixed Methods Analysis with a descriptive statistic focus. Setting or Dataset FMD RapSDI application response dataset and supporting materials (e.g., CV). Population Studied FMD RapSDI applicants (n=164). Intervention/Instrument FMD RapSDI application. Outcome Measures Quantitative and qualitative assessment of evidence of participation in research (publications, abstracts, PI or co-I role on projects). Results Using applicants’ CVs, research backgrounds were determined. Two-thirds of the applicants (68.9%) had at least one peer-reviewed publication with 48.9% having a first author peer-reviewed publication. One-third of the applicants (37.8%) had participated in a funded project according to their CV. One-fourth (24.4%) were listed as the Principal Investigator (or Co-Principal Investigator) on funded research. Over half of the applicants (58.9%) had a conference abstract at the time they submitted their application, with one-third listed as the first author on that abstract. Approximately one-sixth (15.6%) of the applicants had no evidence of research experience indicated through funding or presentation/publication data. Conclusions Applicants in the first six cycles of FMD RapSDI had a range of previous experience in research. The FMD RapSDI program will continue to explore applicants’ experience to provide the necessary support to aid family medicine research capacity-building.
