Burnout and job satisfaction among oncologists: A cross‑sectional study from a tertiary care center

Background: Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress related to work which leads to reduced sense of accomplishment and loss of personal identity. Burnout syndrome can lead to physical symptoms, such as insomnia, anxiety before going to work each day, feeling fatigued and exhausted, early leaving of employees, and quitting. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to estimate the rate of occurrence of burnout among a sample of oncologists and other employees in one of the governmental hospitals in Kashmir. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey study from single center, where we distributed a questionnaire to oncologists (radiation, medical, and surgical), radiation technologists, and physicists working at Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Kashmir. This questionnaire was voluntary, anonymous, worded in English, and was distributed through hard copy. Results: Most of our study population was <40 years of age, 28 (63.6%) with male predominance 34 (77.3%). Residents and technologists have a statistically higher level of exhaustion (P<0.05) on the Oldenburg burnout inventory (OLBI) subscale. Statistically significant disagreement component on the OLBI subscale was observed in radiation oncology and medical oncology workers as compared to surgical oncology workers and physicists. Conclusion: Our survey demonstrated a high rate of exhaustion among oncologists at our center, with more so during the early years of career. More support is necessary to alleviate trigger stressors for medical personnel within the healthcare system. To ensure high-quality medical care, health care workers should be offered preventive mental healthcare services early in their careers.
