Flotation is a key separation technique in mineral processing, influenced by various process parameters. A deep understanding of its mechanisms and precise control is crucial for improving recovery efficiency. Traditional methods rely on empirical knowledge and trial-and-error, leading to high error rates and costs. This study proposes a machine learning-based approach to analyze the impact mechanisms of key flotation parameters and predict combustible matter recovery under unseen experimental conditions. Three classic models – Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosted Regression Tree (GBR), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) – were trained on flotation data, and their performance was compared. The results showed that the XGB model outperformed the others (R2 = 0.923, MAE = 2.43). SHAP analysis indicated that collector type and impeller speed had the greatest influence on recovery, followed by collectors A and B, while airflow rate had the least effect. The analysis also revealed that long-chain alkanes and binary mixed collectors significantly enhance the flotation performance of low-rank coal. This finding aligns with existing research and highlights the potential of machine learning in optimizing flotation agent design. The model’s ability to accurately predict results under new input conditions further demonstrates its practical applicability in optimizing flotation process.
