Le résumé fourni par la source
According to historical records, the concept of sex therapy was first put forth in a 1958 research proposal by Masters and Johnson. Over the years, sex therapy has developed as a valuable clinical tool, and recent randomized controlled trials have pointed toward its effectiveness as both a standalone and adjunct treatment option for sexual dysfunction.1 Sex therapy is commonly performed by highly trained mental health professionals called sex therapists. Within the United States, the first and most widely recognized certifying organization for sex therapists is the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). According to the AASECT webpage, sex therapists are defined as “licensed mental health professionals trained to provide in-depth psychotherapy, specialized in treating clients with sexual issues and concerns.” Multiple pathways exist to becoming a sex therapist, but the most common is to obtain a professional degree such as a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) or licensed professional counselor (LPC), both of which require a Master’s degree. This is followed by additional training to become an AASECT-certified sex therapist which includes a minimum number of hours providing sex therapy under the supervision of an AASECT-certified supervisor.
