Self-reported functioning and need of help of older people in Finland – results from the Healthy Finland Survey Good functional ability increases well-being by enabling people to do things they like and to live independently in old age. We describe physical, psychological, cognitive, and social functioning, sensory functions, basic and everyday activities, internet use and need for assistance, and the accumulation of limitations in the population aged 65 and over by age and gender. The study is based on the Healthy Finland 2022–2023 survey. Functional limitations were relatively rare in 65–69-year-olds, but increased with age. However, the rate of increase varied by domain of functional ability: mobility limitations increased tenfold from the youngest to the oldest age group (90+), but psychological distress remained fairly constant across age groups. Limitations in cognitive, social and sensory functioning and in activities of daily living became more prevalent only after the age of 80 or 90. In women, the age-related change was steeper than in men in activities of daily living, sensory functions, mobility, and internet use. No difference between men and women was found in social participation, and cognitive problems were more prevalent in men. The elderly population is diverse in functional ability, with both high and low performers in all age groups. Promoting functioning and targeting support to those who need it is a key task of public policy in the rapidly ageing Finnish population.
