Professionalism of women agricultural extension personnel in Odisha

Purpose The purpose of the paper is to untangle the status and profile of women extension personnel in Odisha, India and further the result would help in providing a reasonable understanding of competency and role performance level.Methodology Empirical data was obtained from 120 women agricultural extension personnel through personal interviews by applying a purposive sampling method and Ex post-facto research design. For analysis of data frequency, mean, standard deviation, percentage, correlation, regression, and factor analysis were taken.Findings The results revealed that the majority of the young-aged (71.67%) respondents with a Master’s degree (53.34%) perceived a moderately high workload (40.83%), a supportive institutional environment (37.50%) with moderately low institutional communication (46.67%). The respondents had a 44.7% medium professional competency level and a medium level of role performance index of 35.83%.Practical implications The findings of the study can be used by programme planners, policymakers, and administrators, especially in the context of elevating the professionalism level of women agricultural extension officers.Theoretical implications The scarcity of systematic data on the professionalism of women in extension services is a global challenge. Research in this field will provide valuable insights to drive improvements in the professional capabilities of women extension workers internationally, contributing to broader development goals.Originality (i) The study sheds light on the status and profile of women extension personnel, (ii) highlighted the professional competencies and role performance of women extension personnel, and (iii) analysed the relationship between profile characteristics of women agricultural extension personnel and their level of professionalism.
