Cardiorespiratory Responses To Aerobic And Bodyweight Exercises With Blood Flow Restriction In Sedentary Individuals

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the acute cardiorespiratory responses to aerobic and bodyweight resistance exercises, with and without blood flow restriction (BFR), in sedentary individuals. METHODS: Fourteen participants (8 males and 6 females) completed four exercise sessions: walking with BFR, walking without BFR, walking lunges with BFR, and walking lunges without BFR. Walking comprised 15 minutes at 5 km.h-1, while the walking lunges comprised four sets (1 x 30 reps +3 x 16 reps). BFR was applied at 60% of each participant’s limb occlusion pressure during the respective BFR trials. RESULTS: Walking lunges elicited higher cardiorespiratory responses than walking. Specifically, walking lunges resulted in 57% of V̇O2 max and 66% of HRmax, while walking elicited 47% of V̇O2 max and 61% of HRmax. The application of BFR further increased these responses, with walking lunges reaching 60% of V̇O2 max and 70% of HRmax, and walking reaching 53% of V̇O2 max and 63% of HRmax when BFR was applied. DISCUSSION: Bodyweight resistance exercises like walking lunges can achieve similar cardiorespiratory responses to traditional aerobic exercises, such as walking, especially with an applied BFR. Findings also indicate that BFR significantly elevates cardiorespiratory responses to both walking and walking lunges. The increase in V̇O2 and HR in the BFR conditions shows that BFR elevates the metabolic requirements of both walkin and walking lunge exercise, suggesting BFR in these modes may enhance cardiovascular outcomes compared to the non-BFR exercise. CONCLUSIONS: The similarity in responses between walking and walking lunges, especially with BFR, suggests that bodyweight resistance exercises could be a viable alternative to traditional aerobic exercises for individuals who may benefit from incorporating both aerobic and resistance components into their workout routines. This study provides flexibility for practitioners when designing exercise programs involving BFR. Both walking and walking lunges with BFR can be considered effective options for improving cardiovascular fitness in sedentary individuals, with the choice of exercise mode being adaptable based on individual needs and preferences.
